In Case of a Medical Emergency in Church

Have you ever noticed the medical equipment in the Emergency Equipment Supplies alcove of the Gathering Space while on your way into church? Although we arranged this some time ago, some people are unfamiliar with it. So, I thought I would discuss what is included in this area so that you could help someone in an emergency!

The white metal box on the upper left side contains an AED (automated external defibrillator). An AED is a small, portable device that delivers an electric shock to correct abnormal heart rhythms in people at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. First, the device analyzes the heart rhythm to determine whether it can be corrected; if the rhythm is shockable, the device will do so. The machine will also tell you if no shock is needed. If there is a medical emergency and an AED is required, open the metal case it is enclosed in. A loud alarm will sound once the door is opened, but that is okay; it will let others in the building know there is an emergency and to call 911. Remove the AED from the secure metal housing, open the lid, and press the “on” button. The AED will instruct you, so listen and follow its prompts. By paying attention and following the simple step-by-step directions, you can successfully help save someone’s life. You do not need to be trained, licensed, or certified to use this device, but having prior knowledge is beneficial. If there is a healthcare provider on site, they will ask you to bring the device to them for use during the emergency.

The red trauma kit in the upper right corner of the alcove contains trauma supplies, which the Shelby Township Fire Department showed us how to use in case of a traumatic event at our church, such as a shooting. They demonstrated applying pressure to wounds and applying a tourniquet to a bleeding limb. Although we all like to think something like this would never happen in a school or church, it already happens far too often in our country. If this equipment were ever needed, open the plastic snaps on the right side of the kit, take it down from the wall, and bring it to the emergency site.

The red backpack at the bottom left of the alcove contains a stethoscope, blood pressure machine, scissors, gauze, bandages, drinks, glucose tabs, and other equipment that can be used in emergencies (until 911 responds) should someone faint, become unconscious, fall and hit their head, or experience a medical event. The equipment in this backpack can be used in an emergency.

The last piece of equipment in the lower right corner of the Emergency Equipment Supplies alcove is an Ambu-Bag, which provides air (breaths) to a person who is not breathing.

AED training is included in CPR classes, and there are two short instructional videos on the St. Therese of Lisieux website under the “Health Ministry” tab. The videos demonstrate how to use the AED and address common questions people may have about its use. The St. Therese of Lisieux Health Ministry has also provided “emergency” education to staff, ushers, the K of C, and other ministries.

Unfortunately, medical emergencies on church premises can occur at any time of day, and others may not be available to assist. We ask that you take a moment to familiarize yourself with the emergency equipment in case you are ever asked to bring it to an emergency.
