Today’s celebration of the Epiphany is often referred to as “little Christmas” because we once again hear the story of how Jesus’ birth was made manifest. This time, however, it is to the whole world. The Magi who came from the East were not Jewish; they were Gentiles, and so they represent the rest of the world. The birth of Jesus was intended not only for the Jewish community but for all of creation. The Magi heard the story and saw the Christ Child with their own eyes. They then carried the Good News back to their own country.
Today, the Gospel message has been carried all over the world (and even to the moon). It is proclaimed via radio, TV, satellite, the internet, the written word, and in person. Every individual has the opportunity to experience God’s Word and revelation, but the message is not forced. People are invited to experience the message and make their own decision whether to follow it or not.
As we continue to celebrate the Christmas season, let us be like the Magi, who were led to the Christ Child and then took the message back to their own people. May we not be afraid to evangelize by living out the Gospel in word and deed.
