Musings and Messages: January 18, 2026

We continue the theme of the baptism of the Lord from last week, but this time we hear it from John the Baptist’s perspective. Obviously John knew Jesus; he was his cousin. He also probably heard stories from his mother about what happened when Mary came to visit Elizabeth. So it must have been a bit disconcerting for John to baptize Jesus; but he did. In that action, John came to realize and then later testify that Jesus was indeed the Son of God.

Can we make that same affirmation not just verbally, but by our way of life as well? Do we truly live out the responsorial psalm “here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.” It is easy to do our own will, but it is much more difficult to do the will of God.

The words from the prophet Isaiah can also be applied to each one of us: we were formed as God’s servants from the womb. We each have a purpose and a destiny. Our job is to discover what that purpose is and to live it out.

This week in your prayer, ask the Lord to reveal what he wants you to do as his servant. What is your purpose in life and what are you doing to accomplish it?
