Why Am I a Knight?

There are many reasons why every Catholic man should be a member of the Knights of Columbus, but, for me, one reason stands out clearly: The total barrage of bad news about our world surrounds us every day and calls for action. Turn on the TV, open a newspaper, listen to the radio—sickness, wars, political upheaval, natural disasters, crime in our streets, loss of respect for the lives of the elderly and unborn, just to name a few.

The need for help is obvious. It’s so easy to just throw up our hands in despair and believe there is nothing that we can do about it. That’s our world—accept it that way and just get on with my own life. I am only one person; I can’t change the world. Or can I?

That’s where a million Knights of Columbus step in. The Knights are, in fact, changing the world every day—across the ocean, across America, and right here in Shelby Township. For example, at January’s membership meeting, we donated to help Mary’s Mantle, Ryan Rocks, Rising Stars Academy Foundation, Gift of Life Michigan, Right to Life, Challenger Baseball, St. Vincent de Paul, and Detroit Catholic Campus Ministry, and that’s just a small sample of the many people we help in many ways.

You can help, too. It’s what you and I are called to do. Remember that old saying, “Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.” Light your own candle. Join the Knights!
