Musings and Messages: November 24, 2024

On this last Sunday of the Church Year, we hear a conversation between Pilate and Jesus about the nature of kingship. Pilate views kingship from a sociopolitical perspective, whereas Jesus sees kingship as deriving from truth. In other words, those who ascribe to the truth see the logic that makes Jesus king.

However, in the current day, leadership has its challenges. We have presidents and monarchs. We have those who are elected and those who ascend to their position. Regardless of how one becomes the leader of a company or a country, their leadership must stem from the truth. They must lead with honesty and integrity. Their decisions will be scrutinized and analyzed to ensure that they are fair and just. Even those who are good leaders will often face opposition and criticism. Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life, faced opposition during his earthly lifetime and certainly faces it today.

Whether or not a person accepts Jesus as King or Lord and Savior, the fact is at some point in history, all will be made manifest. On this Feast of Christ the King, we Christians acknowledge that Jesus is our King and Savior. He rules. May we, his loyal subjects, follow in his path and model our lives on truth and justice.
