Today, we celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord. In Luke’s account, Jesus reminds his apostles that they are witnesses to his ministry and that they are to carry on his work after they receive “the promise” of the Father. In the meantime, they continue to praise God in the Temple. The promise of the Father is, of course, the Holy Spirit. Implicit in today’s Gospel is a command to all of us, as well: to continue the work of the Lord and praise God in the temple.
Yet, even after Jesus ascended to heaven, the apostles stood looking up at the sky. They had to be reminded to get to work. Very often, we do the same. While we praise the Lord and contemplate the mysteries, it is important for us to get to work living the Gospel. We have all received the Holy Spirit at baptism and confirmation. We are equipped for ministry, yet sometimes we fail to put our faith into action.
This feast serves as a reminder that we are destined to go where Jesus has already gone. However, in the meantime, we are challenged to live our faith in both word and deed.
