Many of us make annual resolutions for the New Year. And although many of them aim to improve an aspect of our health, it’s often too difficult to keep them, or we lose interest after a month or two. Whether our goals are too lofty or unrealistic, it is probably best to commit to improving our overall health through a variety of strategies rather than focusing on a single goal, like weight loss.
It is important to remember that, just as our physical health is important, emotional and spiritual health are equally essential. So, when deciding what changes you would like to make in the New Year to improve your overall health, don’t forget to incorporate activities that boost your mental and spiritual self, as well.
While thinking about this article, I came across a personal health plan from an Ascension handout that is worth sharing. I took the liberty of adding a few of my own thoughts to the list, as well. You will note that many of these strategies are topics we discuss regularly in this column throughout the year. Enjoy!
“I will be successful and feel healthier if I…”
- Start my day with prayer, giving myself to God.
- Find purpose in my life.
- Practice gratitude on a daily basis.
- Become the “best version of myself,” as God intended.
- Share my talents with others.
- Exercise or walk every day (for at least 30 minutes per day and five days per week).
- Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
- Take personal time every day (self-care).
- Make healthy food choices (low-fat, low sugar).
- Drink at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water every day.
- Get at least seven or eight hours of sleep every night.
- Recognize stress and try to lessen it through different strategies, such as prayer, meditation, exercise, reading, enjoying grandchildren/pets, and doing things I enjoy.
- Build and cultivate friendships.
- Cherish relationships with my loved ones.
- Thank others every day for their contributions and for being part of my life.
- Set short-term goals and realistic expectations.
- Am kind to myself. No one is perfect!
- Maintain my physical health by following up with annual medical, vision, and dental appointments and consulting with my healthcare provider(s) to develop a personal health plan.
- End my day with a prayer and give glory to God!
